“Changing Leaves on Deciduous Trees”
Participants will identify common species of deciduous trees and learn about why the
leaves change color in the fall. The program will close with each participant making at
least one decorative and scientific leaf print to take home with them.
November 15
“Birding & Building”
Participants will take a guided bird walk around the farm. We will learn what birds live
on Long Island all winter long and how they survive through the cold weather. Our
master birder will offer tips to help you learn how to identify local species in your
own backyard! Don’t forget to bring your binoculars. The program will conclude with
each person constructing a winter bird feeder of their own. All Participants will be
given the opportunity to sign up for Cornell’s Lab of Ornithology “Project Feeder-
Watch” program. Each family that signs up will receive a research kit and learn how to
collect data about local bird populations. Your data could be published in scientific
journals and also help contribute to overall bird conservation nationwide!

“Green All Winter Long...”
What is an evergreen? A conifer? Are all pine trees the same? Come learn about the
beautiful trees that provide foliage all year long. Learn how to tell the difference between
a white pine and a pitch pine, what species are native, and why the Pine Barrens
are so important. We will spend the second part of this program gathering evergreens
from around the farm and use them to make a beautiful holiday wreath. Please bring
a metal coat hanger to use as a frame for your wreath.
